Just as there are calls to support war, there are opponents who exercise their right in a democracy to patriotic dissent. Both sides have expressed themselves from the Revolutionary War to this day. In 1776, Thomas Paine, whose “Common Sense” pamphlet prompted many colonists to join the fight for independence, wrote a series of essays supporting a self-governing America. In one early essay, he declares: “These are the times that try men’s souls. ”9 Nevertheless, about a third to one half of the colonists (called Loyalists or Tories) were opposed to war against the British.

After the United States sent armed forces into Iraq, rumors circulated on the Internet, in classrooms, and through published news stories that the government would or was taking steps to restore the draft. While legislation has been proposed in Congress to do just that, there has been very little support for passage. Still, the pros and cons of a draft are argued, particularly among young adults who would be affected the most.
