By Semyon Alesker (auth.), Carles Casacuberta, Rosa Maria Miró-Roig, Joan Verdera, Sebastià Xambó-Descamps (eds.)

This is the second one quantity of the complaints of the 3rd eu Congress of arithmetic. quantity I provides the speeches introduced on the Congress, the record of lectures, and brief summaries of the achievements of the prize winners in addition to papers via plenary and parallel audio system. the second one quantity collects articles by way of prize winners and audio system of the mini-symposia.
This two-volume set therefore supplies an outline of the state-of-the-art in lots of fields of arithmetic and is for this reason of curiosity to each expert mathematician.

Introduction There are many excellent articles and surveys on Kasparov's KK-theory and the Baum-Connes conjecture (see [2, 16, 22,44,48]) and on the Banach KK-theory ([44,48]). Here we shall not define Banach KK-theory (see [33,44,48]) but only give, in a self-contained way, an idea of why it can be applied to the Baum-Connes conjecture. Let G be a second countable locally compact group. The Baum-Connes conjecture predicts the bijectivity of a morphism of abelian groups from a topological K-theory group (which is computable in principle) to the K-theory of the reduced C·-algebra of G.

These are described at length in Chapters 11-14 ofthe author's book [9], which also makes the construction substantially more powerful by incorporating Calabi Conjecture methods, and gives many more examples. The subject of this paper is a second construction of compact 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7), which was published by the author in [8] and [9, Chapter 15]. As in the first construction, we begin with a compact Spin(7)-orbifold, and resolve its singularities to get a Spin(7)-manifold. However, in this case the initial orbifold is not T 8 /r but a quotient Y/ (a) of a Calabi-Yau 4-orbifold Y by an antiholomorphic involution o'.
